El Gato Malo headlines Lone Star Derby(G3)

May 09, 2008 · By · Share El Gato Malo, our three-year-old son of El Corredor, seeks to capture another graded stake in Saturday's $400,000 Lone Star Derby(G3).  As the only graded winner in the field of thirteen, El Gato Malo is the class of the field.  Breaking from post two, El Gato should get an excellent trip with the opportunity to establish a ground saving position. New pilot Rafael Bejarino takes the reins on El Gato Malo for the race.

El Gato Malo will break new ground in the Lone Star Derby,  literally in some sense.  This will be his first start outside of California and first time racing on a conventional dirt surface. He also adds blinkers for the race. He has been training well in the blinkers ever since his Santa Anita Derby, and trainer Craig Dollase feels "optimistic that El Gato Malo be up to the challenge" of switching to dirt.   Dollase continued, "We really thought this would be an excellent spot for El Gato Malo.  We expect him to run very well."

The Lone Star Derby is the 10th race on the Saturday's card at Lone Star. Post time is 6:47 EDT / 5:47 CDT.
