Stable readies for summer meets

July 13, 2008 · By · Share

The summer meets kickoff next week at Del Mar, and West Point Thoroughbreds is positioned for monster meets on both coasts.

In California, graded stakes winner Awesome Gem will likely make his return to the races in the $85,000 Wickerr Handicap. Awesome Gem's ultimate goal will be the Grade 1 $1,00,000 Pacific Classic in August. Del Mar is also expected to provide the setting for several two-year-old debuts. The west coast string is firing on all cylinders.

On the east coast, the barn continues to be absolutely loaded as we ready our assault on Saratoga. Macho Again will return to graded stakes company, and up to twelve two-year-olds will make starts at the upstate New York racing shrine. Included in the contingent is impressive debut winner Phosphorescent who will likely make his next start in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special on August 14th.

West Point Thoroughbreds President Terry Finley shared his thoughts heading into the meet saying, "This is one of the most special times of the year. Everyone is a little more relaxed, but the racing at Del Mar and Saratoga is some of the best you will see all year. You see a bunch of the babies really start to come forward, and the older horses get to compete against the best of their peers. If you have not experienced the excitement of the summer meets you don't know what you're missing."
