RJ's Brigade Wins Four in a Row
If there were ever a text-book way to win a horserace, RJ's Brigade followed that text to the letter on Thursday afternoon at Laurel, as he racked up an impressive fourth consecutive victory. RJ broke well from the two-hole and, for the length of the backstretch, just sat comfortably off the pace. Never out of touch with the front-runners, he looked perfectly at ease in fifth and then fourth position. Just past three-eighths pole Victor Molina took him four wide for his rally, and he responded like clock-work, steadily gaining on and passing the front-runner. In the stretch he maintained his focus and widened the lead to win by a length. He has now won four in a row at three different tracks. Lupe was absolutely delighted with the effort and talked immediately about the future. He has it in mind nominate RJ to a stake in Delaware in September. He admits it might be a little quick to bring him back, but even if RJ needs a few more weeks, he says he'll definitely spot him in a stake next out.
Trainer Lupe Preciado said, "He went perfectly, settled beautifully behind the speed, took over when asked, and won at will."
Jockey Victor Molina loved his ride. "He did exactly what I wanted," he said. "He was going easy down the backstretch and waited until I told him to go. All I did was keep the tension in the stretch."
A five-year-old son of Gone West, RJ's Brigade now has five wins from seventeen career starts. With his four race win streak, RJ's Brigade now has four wins from five starts in 2008. His career earnings now stand at $169,452
