Land Grant wins
The trip was unadventurous, but the result was exhilarating as Land Grant scored a gate-to-wire victory in a maiden special weight at the Meadowlands. Breaking from post eight, Land Grant got away alertly and was pushed to the front by jockey Alan Garcia. Land Grant blazed through a quarter-mile 22.1 while facing pressure from the outside. Land Grant put away the other speed on the turn and opened up a daylight lead at the head of the stretch. Land Grant pulled away with every stride to a five-length advantage before being ridden out late to capture the race by over four-lengths.
Jockey Alan Garcia said, "I thought I had the best horse today, so I put him in front. I wanted to take the other speed out of the race and make them chase me. We put away the seven horse on the turn, and my colt responded when I asked him. I looked under my shoulder and saw we were in front. This colt was still a little green, but he did what he had to do. He won easily."
A two-year-old son of West Acre, Land Grant finished third in his debut at Saratoga. With so much still to learn, Land Grant looks to only improve as he continues to mature.
