WPT pre-enters two in Breeders' Cup
2008 looks a lot like 2007 as West Point Thoroughbreds will once again send multiple entrants to the Breeders' Cup. Last year, we sent a record five horses to Monmouth Park. This year we will send two more entrants to Santa Anita for the 25th edition of the Breeders' Cup World Championships.
Graded stakes winner Awesome Gem will look to improve upon his 2007 third place effort in the Grade 1 $5,000,000 Breeders' Cup Classic. Awesome Gem enters the Classic off of a second place effort in the Grade 3 All American at Golden Gate.
Awesome Gem will be joined in the starting gate by Tropic Storm who will contest the inaugural $1,000,000 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. The multiple graded placed son of Stormy Atlantic enters the Turf Sprint off of a gutsy third place finish in the Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile.
Both Awesome Gem and Tropic Storm are conditioned by Craig Dollase who said, "Both these horses are hard-trying and talented runners. They're the kind of athletes that any trainer would love to have in their barn. Awesome Gem has knocked at the door of some of the biggest races in the country, but he has not broken through. He ran huge last year, and we have a home court advantage this year. Tropic Storm has knocked heads with some of the fastest colts on the west coast. We stretched him out the last couple races, and I think he should appreciate the cutback in distance."
Come back next week as we unveil our 2008 Breeders' Cup section of the web site.
