Reine des Lions Reigns Supreme
"Reine" Reigns in Philadelphia
You know the old phrase, "always a bridesmaid, but never a bride," well that no longer applies to Reine des Lions, who broke her maiden today at Philadelphia Park. In her first six starts, Reine had finished second in exactly half those starts. But after her impressive wire-to wire victory, she now gets to add a win to her resume.
"I thought she had a great chance to win today," said trainer Guadalupe Preciado. "I decided to run her back pretty quickly, but that's because she's been doing well and she's talented." I wouldn't have run her on such short rest if I didn't think she was doing extremely well," he continued speaking to the fact that Reine des Lions started just eight days ago.
Under jockey Roberto Alvarado, Jr, Reine broke on the lead and would never look back. She led through an opening quarter of :22.4 and a half mile of :46.3, and she opened a three-and-a-half length lead turning for home en route to the comfortable three length win. "I didn't have to do anything today," said Alvarado. "She broke great and basically, all I had to do was hold on and not fall off. She was great today."
The win, however, wasn't without a few tense moments, as Reine had to withstand a rider's objection to have her picture taken. The inquiry was quickly disallowed and the result allowed to stand. "The only objection in that race was that she was too fast for the rest of the field," joked Preciado.
For her win, the two-year-old daughter of Lion Heart earned $18,600 for the win and has now banked over $45,000 during her young career.
