Fitz Just Right Finishes 2nd in Bourbonette Oaks
Fitz Now Graded-Stakes Placed After 2nd in Bourbonette
Following her track-record effort in the Ocala Breeder's Sale Championship, Fitz Just Right's trainer Kiaran McLaughlin decided it was time to step up and take on graded stakes company. And after her game effort in the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park, Fitz is now graded-stakes placed after her second-place finish in the Grade 3 event.
Fitz Just Right was forced to duel for the lead throughout the Oaks, which was run at a mile. Unable to catch a breather throughout the entire race, Fitz was actually third as they turned for home. She showed her class and determination to get up for second, but was no match for the winner, Hot Cha Cha.
Jockey Cornelio Velasquez was proud of his filly's effort. "She was forced to run hard throughout the entire race and she never quit. She kept trying all the way to the wire and never stop competing. She showed a lot of heart today."
Velasquez also said he didn't think Fitz Just Right handled Turfway Park's all-weather track particularly well. "She never seemed to get a hold of it," said Velasquez. "I'm not using it as an excuse because the winner was much the best, but she never seemed totally comfortable."
For her runner-up effort, Fitz earned $29,250 and is now graded-stakes placed. She has now earned over $140,000 for her career, which spans just five races, including three wins and now, a second place finish.
West Point Thoroughbreds President Terry Finley said he plans to sit down with Kiaran McLaughlin in the near future to determine where Fitz's next start will be.
