Justwhistledixie Does It Again
'Dixie Makes it 5 Straight in Bonnie Miss
Once again, Justwhistledixie showed why she is the 'people's champion.' Sent off as the prohibitive 3-5 choice in the Bonnie Miss, 'Dixie put forth an eye-popping performance to score her fifth consecutive victory overall, and second straight in a Grade II.
After breaking from the outside in the field of six, 'Dixie was forced to go four wide around the first turn and remained parked outside as they passed the quarter pole. After chasing the leader through a speedy opening half mile of :46.1, 'Dixie was given her cue by jockey Julien Leparoux. She ranged up on the outside and as they turned for home, and from there it was a two horse race between 'Dixie and the horse that finished behind her in the Davona Dale, Casanova Move. While Casanova Move was once again dead- game, the 'people's champ' would not be denied as she edged clear late to score her fifth straight win.
The final margin was officially a length-and-three-quarters, but according to Leparoux, it could have been more. "Before the race, Neil (assistant trainer Neil McLaughlin) told me not to fully extend her if I didn't have to. Once I got past the other filly, I wrapped up on her," said Leparoux, who was riding her for the first time.
When asked about if he thought 'Dixie was in trouble because of how wide she was forced to go, Leparoux casually stated, "not at all, she's a machine."
The win, 'Dixie's second consecutive in a G2, was worth $120,000 and she has now banked over $337,000 during her career. She has five wins and two thirds from seven career starts.
When asked for his take on Justwhistledixie's performance, WPT President Terry Finley simply had this to say, "It's on to Kentucky," referring to the fact that 'Dixie's next start will be in the G1 $500,000 Kentucky Oaks, the most prestigious race in America for three-year-old fillies.
The win pushed West Point Thoroughbreds over the $1 million mark in purses won so far this year. It was also the third graded stakes win already this year for WPT.
