Justwhistledixie Finishes 2nd in G1 Acorn Stakes
Filly Finishes Second in First Appearance in a Grade 1
Justwhistledixie finished a game second in her first start in a Grade 1 race in Saturday's Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park. Gabby's Golden Gal got loose on the lead never looked back en route to her first win in a graded stakes. The runner-up finish adds to 'Dixie's accolades as one can now add Grade 1-placed to her already impressive resume.
'Dixie, breaking from post eight in the field of nine three year old fillies, tracked the eventual winner early through speedy opening fractions of 22.3 and 45.1. As they turned for home, she loomed a threat but could never get to the winner.
"The speed just never came back to us," said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. "I thought for her first race in ten weeks, it was a really solid effort."
Jockey Julien Leparoux agreed with the trainer's assessment. "I thought we were the winner all the way around. I had her in a good spot, but the leader just never stopped and that filly ran really hard. I was proud that my filly never quit."
The three-year-old daughter of Dixie Union did have her five race win streak snapped with her second place finish in the Acorn Stakes, but did come out of the race in good shape.
Her effort on Saturday was worth $60,000, and she has now earned just under $400,000 in her young career. 'Dixie also finished in the money once again; marking the eighth straight time the filly has done so to begin her career.
