A June to Remember
West Point Thoroughbreds Kicks Off Summer Season with Memorable Month
June has come to an end, and with it, one of the more successful months in the history of WPT. During the month, the stable had nine winners from 29 starts, good for a 31% clip. Even more impressive, however, was the fact that of the 29 entrants donning the trademark black and gold silks, 21 of them finished in the top three, an unheard of 72%.
The signature win in June for West Point Thoroughbreds was Macho Again's triumph in the G1 $660,000 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs. Two other horses contested graded-stakes during the month, with Justwhistledixie finishing second in the G1 Acorn at Belmont Park, and Awesome Gem finishing a tough-luck fifth in the G2 Californian at Hollywood Park.
Other notable performances during the month included Rereadthefootnotes' impressive comeback win in the East, and Awesome Gem's score on the turf out West. June also saw WPT's first two-year-old starter of the year, with Successful Score running an extremely game second in his debut race at Churchill Downs.
"We're happy for our partners that our horses performed so well in June," said WPT President Terry Finley. "We hope our horses can continue to perform well as we go forward this summer."
Perhaps the two most remarkable facts about the stable's start to the summer were that between June 15th and June 24th, 10 WPT horses went to the post, and all of them finished in the money; and that during the month of June, the stable's runners earned more than $717,000 combined.
