Flat Bold Set for King's Bishop Stakes
West Point Thoroughbreds' striking dark bay colt Flat Bold is set to contest the $300,000 NetJets King's Bishop Stakes(G1) this Saturday at Saratoga. He is coming off a solid fourth place effort in the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) on August 1. The field for the King's Bishop includes several quality three-year-olds, but our colt is training superbly and is primed for a big effort.
Two starts back, Flat Bold exploded at the top of the stretch in a Belmont Park allowance race to win in dominating fashion. The seven furlong distance suits him perfectly and we hope he comes flying late. The pace looks like it is going to be brutally fast, and we can sit off the pace without having to take too tight a hold of the colt.
Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin is excited about his horse's chances. "He is training well and always shows up. I think the distance is favorable for us. He should run well."
West Point Thoroughbreds' Terry Finley believes Flat Bold is a serious contender. "He is a beautiful horse with a beautiful stride. He deserves a shot in here. Let's hope he settles and comes running late."
Flat Bold has his final workout on Tuesday morning in preparation for the race. He went three furlongs in 35.22 over the main track. The work was third fastest of ten at the distance. He broke off about ten lengths behind a couple other horses then ended up in front of them shortly after the wire.
Saturday at Saratoga is a big day for West Point. We also send out the highly regarded two-year-old filly Sheryl's Melody to debut for Dallas Stewart and the veteran campaigner RJ's Brigade on the turf for Lupe Preciado.
Post Time for the King's Bishop (Race 11) is set for 5:10pm. Flat Bold drew number 8 of 9, and Ramon Dominguez will have the return mount. ESPN coverage begins at 4:30 pm.
