El Gato Malo Wins!
El Gato Malo es muy rápido y impresionante. In Spanish, this translates to "the bad cat is very fast and impressive." That he was. The prey better run and hide. El Gato Malo is back. On a sunny closing day at Del Mar yesterday, our four-year-old El Corredor gelding roared past a tough allowance field to score by a neck over the firm turf.
He broke alertly then settled comfortably in the middle of the pack just off the rail. After traveling easily down the backstretch, jockey David Flores swung him out around the far turn and called on him for more. El Gato Malo swung four wide at the top of the stretch and simply exploded like a "bad cat" should. He split horses in the stretch and would not be denied the victory. The final time for the mile and one sixteenth was 1:40.44.
Trainer Craig Dollase was thrilled with the performance. "He's as good as he's ever been. Everything new normally gets this horse worked up, and he hadn't been through the Del Mar routine. He saddled great, was good in the post parade, and he clearly showed how good he was in the race. I wasn't sure he'd be ready to run like that off such a long layoff. I think his race was a testament to how talented he is."
David Flores said, "That's El Gato Malo. He was so good. He had to come wide, but I had a ton of horse. The more he ran the more he got into beating these horses. He was so much more mature this time. He is back."
El Gato Malo earned $42,000 for the black and gold with this victory. He now has 6 wins from 12 career starts and earnings of over $530,000. We are very excited about his fall campaign. Our ultimate goal is the Breeder's Cup Dirt Mile on November 7 at Santa Anita.
