Middle of the Nite Wins!
Two races could not have been more diametrically opposite than Middle of the Nite's debut and his race on Sunday at Belmont Park. From start to finish his debut was filled with trouble. From gate to wire, his second start could not have been scripted better.
A dark bay son of Offlee Wild, Middle of the Nite broke well and dueled for the lead from the inside through fractions of 22.2 and 45.2. He quickly shook clear at the top of the stretch and improved his position from there drawing off to nearly a three-length victory. He stopped the teletimer in a sharp 1:09.3.
Trainer Tom Albertrani said, "I had heard a lot of good things about this colt before I got him. When he came to me you could see he had a lot of talent. He still has to figure out some things, but you could see from this performance that he's gifted. He showed good speed and kept going. A lot of horses won't go on when they get pressed from the outside, but he ran away and hid."
Jockey Edgar Prado said, "I just wanted to get my colt out of the gate okay. From there he did the rest. He showed good speed. When I went to open up he gave me another gear. I just wanted to make sure I kept him busy in the stretch."
Middle of the Nite earned $25,800 for the victory. We look forward to an exciting fall campaign with this talented colt.
