El Gato Malo On Target For Citation Handicap (G1)

November 24, 2009 · By · Share

West Point Thoroughbreds' El Gato Malo is making his Grade I stakes debut in Friday's $300,000 Citation Handicap (G1) at Hollywood Park. The four-year-old gelded son of El Corredor is coming off a wide trip in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint on November 7. Since the Breeders' Cup, he has trained superbly, and is poised for a big effort. We hope "the bad cat" comes running late.

After a freshening this summer, El Gato Malo won a tough allowance race on the turf at Del Mar in September. His previous accomplishments include wins in the Lone Star Derby (G3), San Rafael Stakes(G3), Mc Cann's Mojave Stakes, and Gold Rush Stakes.

Trainer Craig Dollase is excited about El Gato Malo's chances. "His last win at Del Mar was going long on the turf. I think this distance suits him. He is a very talented horse; we just have to hope he puts all the pieces together on Friday. If he is on his game, he will be tough to beat."

El Gato Malo has a record of 6-1-1 from 14 career starts, and earnings of over $534,000. He drew post 7 of 10 in the Citation. Jockey David Flores will be aboard. Post time is scheduled for 4:30 PST.
