Awesome Gem 2nd In Charles Town Classic
Let me count the reasons why Awesome Gem is a special horse. They far exceed his $1,928,682 in earnings. Our seven-year-old warrior knows how to do only one thing, run his race each and every time no matter when, where, or on what surface. For many horses, shipping across country to run on a bull ring at night might have been a bit too much to handle. For Awesome Gem it was just another race. Awesome Gem ran an awesome race to finish second in the $1,000,000 Charles Town Classic on Saturday night.
Awesome Gem did what he does. He sat near the back of the pack early in the three-turn contest. He got a bit of a wide trip around the tight turns before launching his run with just about a half-mile to go. Awesome Gem set sail after Researcher, the defending champion in the race and drew within about two-lengths at the top of the short stretch. He kept coming, but the wire came faster.
Trainer Craig Dollase said, "I can't be prouder of this horse. He's become such a professional. It's amazing how much he loves his job now. He ran one of his best races. The winner absolutely loves that track. He had to put up a 108 Beyer to beat us. That's a huge number in a non-graded stake. Awesome Gem just does not know how to quit."
Jockey David Flores said, "The winner ran huge, but my horse was as game as the come. He kept coming when I asked him. He got around those tight turns and just kept running. I thought we might get there, but the winner just had something left in the last sixteenth of a mile."
Awesome Gem is set to ship back to his home base at Hollywood Park this week. We will let our veteran campaigner recharge his batteries before gearing up for an exciting summer campaign.
