Moonstruck Maya wins!!!

June 17, 2010 · By · Share

With all due respect to Olympia Dukakis and Cher, it looks like there's another box office smash named Moonstruck debuting this summer.  This show's name is Moonstruck Maya and she will be playing at a racetrack in southern California all summer.

The feature presentation got off to a slightly rocky start when she broke slowly from the gate in a five-furlong MSW at Hollywood Park.  The backers that sent her off as the odds-on choice were nervous.  Would this race be a flop? Well, no good story can be judged simply on its opening act.  Moonstruck Maya would trail the entire field for three-furlongs, but then the action heated up.  Moonstruck Maya tipped to the outside for jockey Joel Rosario and took aim on the villain, the determined leader.  Maya began gobbling up ground and looked destined for victory, but the leader would not surrender easily.  However, this story was destined to have a Hollywood ending as Maya stuck her nose in front at the wire to win.

Not bad for a rookie.  Much like The Godfather, this story might just have a better sequel.  Get your popcorn ready.

Trainer Carla Gaines said, "I was very confident going into the race, but when she broke slow I thought, oh no.  No matter how good a horse you are sometimes the speed will just carry going five furlongs.  It's so hard to spot the field any lengths in this type of race.  Then we're five wide in a four horse field.  We had no choice.  When she straightened away in the stretch and unleased that big stride it was just a question if the wire was going to get there too soon.  I couldn't tell.  When they put her number up I was thrilled.  She's a talented filly."

Jockey Joel Rosario said, "My filly is so much better than winning by a nose.  I just wanted her to get used to things when she didn't break great.  When I asked her to run she really took off.  She was a little green and not totally sure what was going on, but she was the best filly in the race.  She's special.  I loved her."

Moonstruck Maya earned a 54 Beyer in the race and collected $24,600 for the win.  For comparison purposes, the juvenile stake winner at Hollywood only earned a 60.  This was a great race.  She cooled out well and was bright and alert this morning.  We have not circled a next target but expect to make huge noise in stakes races at the Del Mar meet.
