Tropic Storm set for Morvich Handicap(G3)
Southern California is on alert again as they prepare to be hit by Tropic Storm in the $100,000 Morvich Handicap(G3) on Monday at Oak Tree at Hollywood. Returning after nearly a two year layoff in August, Tropic Storm rampaged through Del Mar with two wins including a brilliant victory in the Windy Sands Stakes on closing weekend. The win was the first stakes score for Tropic Storm after four graded stakes placings. Now, the six-year-old son of Stormy Atlantic will look to capture his first graded stakes win and punch his ticket to the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs.
Trainer Craig Dollase feels good about his charge's chances. "His last win was a thing of beauty. To have only one race after a two-year-layoff and take a stakes field gate-to-wire over that Del Mar strip is a testament to just how good this horse can be. He's super fast, but he can carry his speed. He does not need the lead," Dollase Said.
West Point Thoroughbreds President Terry Finley said, "We took a hard look at the Oak Tree Mile and the Morvich. Tropic Storm was doing so well that we wanted to keep all our options open. When we took a look at both races we decided that the Morvich was a better fit. We've already run against and beaten a couple of the horses in here, and we thought he'd be able to use his natural speed more tactically in here. It's a Breeders' Cup Challenge race, so we knew that this would be a nice field, but we wouldn't change places with anyone."
Tropic Storm has a record of 6-3-4 from 15 career starts and earnings of over $379,000. The Morvich Handicap will go off as the seventh race with a post time of 4:00 PDT/7:00 EDT. Tropic Storm drew post eight of ten with David Flores back in the irons.
