Audible Called: Awesome Gem To Cornhusker Handicap

June 15, 2011 · By Erin Birkenhauer · Share

WPT called an audible today. Multiple graded stakes winning eight-year-old Awesome Gem will now be pointed for the $300,000 Cornhusker Handicap (gr. III) going 1 1/8 miles on the dirt on Saturday, June 25th at Prairie Meadows.

As much as we would love to reclaim our title in the Hollywood Gold Cup, it’s coming up a very, very salty race with horses like Twirling Candy, Game on Dude, and First Dude pointing there. We’re not afraid of the competition, but think running in the Cornhusker gives us the best opportunity to win. Awesome Gem’s Ragozin numbers are quite a bit better on conventional dirt.

Terry Finley, president of West Point Thoroughbreds says, "We know he runs well in these types of races. We'll face a field very similar in quality to the Lone Star Park Handicap. He's coming off a huge win in Texas, and his last three race series is one of the best in his career. We think he's better on dirt, and see this as another opportunity to add to his $2.5 million dollar bankroll. He travels well and we're headed to Iowa looking for a win."

Awesome Gem is scheduled to have his final work tomorrow at Hollywood in preparation for the race before flying to Iowa early next week.
