El Gato Malo to Sunday's San Antonio at Santa Anita

February 03, 2012 · By Erin Birkenhauer · Share
After considering the options and entering both Saturday’s $150,000 Arcadia (G2) on the turf and Sunday’s $200,000 San Antonio Stakes (G2) on the dirt at Santa Anita, El Gato Malo will start in the latter, West Point management decided earlier this week.

Our 7-year-old gelded son of El Corredor earned his best Ragozin number last year (4-) on the dirt at Fairplex, and he’s hit the board in two of three starts at the San Antonio’s 1 ⅛-mile distance.

Jockey Corey Nakatani retains the mount after piloting El Gato Malo to a solid third-place effort in a Jan. 5 allowance event on the Santa Anita turf.

“I’m looking forward to getting back together with the big boy and hopefully we get the job done,” Nakatani said.

A great post position - four of seven - will give El Gato Malo a solid chance at taking down Game On Dude in his first race back since a runner-up finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) on Nov. 5.

“A break in the weights will be key here,” trainer Craig Dollase said. “We’re one of three assigned 118 pounds, while Game On Dude and Uh Oh Bango are co-highweights at 123. As we saw last summer with Uncle Mo in the King’s Bishop at Saratoga, the best time to take on a good horse is the first race off the layup, and that’s what we’re trying to do here.”

Tres Borrachos, carrying 120 pounds, is another familiar name in the field. Post time for the San Antonio is 2:00 p.m. PST / 5:00 p.m. ET.

Best of luck to “The Bad Cat” and his Partners!
