Awesome Vision/Saginaw Dead Heat in Compelling Word Stakes
Awesome Vision made it three in a row in Thursday’s Compelling Word Stakes at Aqueduct. A dead heat is still a win -- Awesome Vision and the salty veteran Saginaw couldn’t be separated at the wire. Saginaw tried took them gate to wire while Awesome Vision had view of the entire field for most of the race before launching the rally that makes his Partners’ hearts beat through their chests.
The Compelling Word was Awesome Vision’s stakes debut. The 4-year-old son of Awesome Again won two races as a 3-year-old before being sidelined with an injury. Since joining the Tom Albertrani barn last fall, he’s gotten his picture taken in three of four starts.
“Just like in his last race, he had me thinking ‘get third’ at the top of the stretch,” says Terry Finley, “His surge the last hundred yards is just incredible. This is a very talented colt who’s gotten better and better. There are some really fun races for older horses this season.”
Interesting fact: An Ortiz brother has ridden Awesome Vision in all of his victories. Irad Ortiz was aboard for his first three wins before young brother Jose Ortiz took over the reins.
This colt has compiled an impressive record of 5-0-0 from seven starts and earned $175,672.
Awesome Vision was selected as the winning name in the West Point Thoroughbreds naming contest in 2011. He’s out of the Valley Crossing mare Blind Canyon, so it’s a fitting name.
