Eriugena (IRE) Breaks Maiden

March 25, 2013 · By Erin Birkenhauer · Share

Eriugena (IRE) broke his maiden on the lawn yesterday at Tampa Bay Downs for trainer Graham Motion. If you’re wondering ‘what in the world does that name mean’ here you go:

Johannes Scotus Eriugena was an Irish theologian, Neoplatonist philosopher, and poet. He is known for having translated and made commentaries upon the work of Pseudo-Dionysius. Eriugena is also used as an adjective meaning Irish born.

Eriugena’s win brought WPT up to an amazing 32% win percentage and 63% in the money percentage for 2013.

“This horse is still very green,” said Graham Motion. “We’ve seen a great deal of improvement in just three starts with him. In his first race he sort of just ran around there. Last time he started getting the hang of it, and today he put it all together. He still runs in spurts, and will benefit from more experience. Luis (Garcia) gave him a great ride.”

Eriugena (IRE) is by Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) winner Shirocco (GER).
