Ground Transport Amongst Favorites in Illinois Derby

April 18, 2013 · By Erin Birkenhauer · Share

Ground Transport takes on a full field in Saturday’s $750,000 Illinois Derby (G3) at Hawthorne Racecourse in Chicago.

A two time winner this winter at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, the Mike Stidham trainee enters the Illinois Derby off a credible effort in the Louisiana Derby March 30. He’s since worked a bullet half mile at Keeneland in preparation for his second stakes appearance.

The impressive fashion in which this Big Brown colt won a February 23 allowance race over the New Orleans oval sparked Terry Finley and St. Elias Stable to purchase an interest in the son of Big Brown from the connections now known as Get Grounded Stable. Click here to watch the win.

“We had a wide trip in the Louisiana Derby,” said WPT president Terry Finley. “Mark Guidry got off and said that was the first time this colt really had to run hard to the wire. He ran a career best Ragozin number last time despite finishing fifth. His Beyers and Rag numbers have improved in every start, that’s a great thing to have in a developing three-year-old.”

Post time for the Illinois Derby, race 8, is 5:15 CT/6:15 ET. Ground Transport breaks from post 5 of 14 under regular rider Mark Guidry.
