Freedom Child Returns With a Vengeance in Peter Pan (G2)
Freedom Child returns to the races with a vengeance in this Saturday’s $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes (G2), the local prep for the Belmont Stakes. In his last start, the Wood Memorial (G1), he was declared a non starter after the starter still had a hold of him when the gates opened. He ran credibly that day after losing any chance at the break.
Freedom Child aka “big red” around the Tom Albertrani barn, is no stranger to competing against the best of his division. He broke his maiden by five lengths in a 1 1/8 mile maiden special weight at Gulfstream on March 10 over next out winner Bellarmine. As a 2-year-old, he was a good second to Kentucky Derby winner Orb at Aqueduct. Kentucky Derby third place finisher Revolutionary was third behind Freedom Child in that same race. Interestingly enough, both Orb and Freedom Child are by the same sire, Malibu Moon.
“We got very unlucky at the break in the Wood (Memorial),” says WPT president Terry Finley. “He bounced out of that race and has been breathing fire in the mornings since. Tom (Albertrani) has a lot of confidence in this horse, he acts like he has a lot of talent.”
Luis Saez is named to ride Freedom Child. Post time for the Peter Pan (race 9) is 5:17 pm ET on Saturday. He breaks from the rail in the field of 11.
