Miss Lafayette Eyeing Stake at Santa Anita After Maiden Score

September 16, 2013 · By Erin Birkenhauer · Share

Miss Lafayette became the third individual juvenile winner for WPT on Friday at Golden Gate Fields. Off as the heavy field in the one mile turf event, the daugher of Midnight Lute rated comfortably for jockey Corey Nakatani before overpowering the pacesetter and scoring by a comfortable 1 1/4 lengths.

The Craig Dollase trainee ran credibly in two sprint races over the Del Mar synthetic before transferring to the green. Midnight Lute never ran on the turf, but this filly’s dam, Chilling Effect, was a seven time winner over the surface.

Dollase equipped the bay filly with small-cupped “cheater” blinkers for the first time. “We wanted to have her more engaged in the race early,” he said. “In her first two starts she was stuck down inside so we were happy to see outside and in the clear today. Corey (Nakatani) said there was plenty left in the tank. She’s still learning and now has experience around two turns, which is huge for a two-year-old at this time of year.”

Miss Lafayette is now under consideration for the $100,00 Surfer Girl Stakes for 2-year-old fillies run at one mile on the turf on Sunday, October 6 at Santa Anita. This race is the local prep for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies turf run the first weekend of November.
