Twilight Eclipse Pointing for Dubai Sheema Classic

March 02, 2014 · By Erin Birkenhauer · Share

After a powerful performance in the Mac Diarmida Stakes (G2) on Saturday at Gulfstream, Twilight Eclipse is pointing for the $5,000,000 Dubai Sheema Classic (UAE-1) on March 29 at Meydan Racecourse.

The race played out as anticipated and Twilight Eclipse had a near perfect trip under Jose Lezcano. The 5-year-old son of Purim sat in a comfortable stalking position behind pacesetters Alpha and Bingo Bango Bongo in the early stages of the 1 3/8 mile journey before moving clear at the quarter pole and notching his fourth career stakes win.

“I got a very good trip," Lezcano said after enjoying clear sailing the entire way. "I got the position that I wanted behind the two horses with speed. I waited as long as I could and when I asked him he gave me a strong run."

Trainer Tom Albertrani is no stranger to Dubai racing as he worked for Godolphin Racing in the UAE from 1995-2003.

We were in a good spot," Albertrani said. "I just wanted (Lezcano) to ride with confidence, let Alpha go if he wanted to go and put yourself in position. Ride with confidence, take him back where his normal running style would be, and go from there.

"Did you see when he came back? He couldn't pull him up. This horse, just never gets tired. The longer the better. That's the whole key with him."

“The Partners are just ecstatic,” said WPT COO Tom Bellhouse. “We came into this race with so much confidence in our horse and he delivered. Now we have an opportunity to make the trip of a lifetime with our world record holder, it’s unbelievably exciting."

Partners rooting Twilight Eclipse home:

Bred in Kentucky by Epona Thoroughbreds. John Langemeier purchased Twilight Eclipse at the Keeneland January Sale for the bargain price of $1,000.

Twilight Eclipse raced in honor of the eight Thoroughbreds killed in a barn fire Feb. 9 in Georgetown, Ky. The horses belonged to Langemeier and Clara Fenger, from whom WPT acquired Twilight Eclipse in June 2012 after he won two races at Indiana Downs.
