Toasting Wins Sky Beauty Stakes
West Point Thoroughbreds’ beloved 4-year-old filly Toasting crossed the half a million dollar mark in earnings with a score in the $100,000 Sky Beauty Stakes on Sunday at Belmont Park.
Off as the third choice in the compact field of five, the daughter of Congrats was masterfully handled by jockey Javier Castellano. After racing three wide while two lengths off the pace down the backside, she rallied four wide on the turn before being ridden out in the final yards. Toasting earned a 96 Beyer Speed Figure in her second stakes win over the Belmont strip.
"The race set up very well for her," Castellano said. "It was a small field, and the two favorites had similar running styles. I was able to sit off the speed, which is the way she likes to run, and when I asked her, she responded. I like the way she did it today."
"I think she prefers the one-turn races," trainer Tom Albertrani said. "We've been experimenting with her; she won both her races at seven-eighths in the past year, but she can go longer. The plan was to take her back off the speed and I think she does better that way. She does well with this group, but hopefully we can knock one out in a graded stakes with her.”
Toasting is entered in the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, but a decision about whether or not she will go through the ring has not been reached yet. She could come under consideration for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.
