Wine Not Splashes to Victory
Wine Not has developed into a useful New York-bred. After hitting the board at the state-bred first level allowance level four times, he swam through the sloppy stretch to win on Thursday at Aqueduct. He earned a career best 84 Beyer Speed Figures and the win pushed his earnings past the 150k mark.
This was Wine Not’s first start under the care of trainer George Weaver. Jockey Eric Cancel was out of breath returning to the winner’s circle and while still aboard the 4-year-old gelding shouted, “It’s a good thing I’m fit!”
The son of First Dude has always been tough to ride, requiring much encouragement and being known to “hang” in the stretch. Speaking to Cancel post race he said, “I had to put him to a long drive, but we got there, thank you for the opportunity.”
Congratulations to Wine Not’s Partners!
