Spooky Woods and Breaking Lucky Contest Graded Stakes

June 16, 2017 · By Erin Birkenhauer · Share

Two West Point runners compete in graded stakes on Saturday -- Spooky Woods and Breaking Lucky.

Spooky Woods takes on a field of 3-year-old fillies in the $200,000 Summertime Oaks (G2) at Santa Anita. Coming off a third-place finish in a first level allowance on May 4, Jerry Hollendorfer is equipping the Ghostzapper filly with blinkers for the first time.

“In her last race Corey (Nakatani) thought she ran in spurts a little bit,” said Hollendorfer. “We’ve worked her in blinkers a few times, and she went very well. The original plan was to try her on the turf in an allowance race last week, but she’s been training so well that the decision was made to take a shot in the Oaks and try and get her more black type.”

The West Point buying team purchased Spooky Woods at the 2016 Barretts March 2-Year-Old in Training Sale.

A real sweetheart, Spooky Woods is a favorite amongst our Partners and has regular visitors:

Post time for the Summertime Oaks is 5:00 PT. Spooky Woods breaks from post three under leading rider Flavien Prat.

Breaking Lucky seeks his first grade one win in the $500,000 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1). WPT purchased a minority interest in the Lookin at Lucky colt from Gunpowder Farms prior to the Pegasus World Cup in January.

Following the Pegasus, Breaking Lucky ran a bang-up second in the New Orleans Handicap (G2) before having a tough trip over the sloppy going in the Alysheba Stakes (G2) on Kentucky Oaks day.

Last year, after getting beat just a neck in the Woodward Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, the Reade Baker trainee was second to Gun Runner in the Clark Handicap (G1) at Churchill.

The Stephen Foster Handicap is the highlight of Saturday's Downs After Dark card with post time at 9:45 ET. Breaking Lucky breaks from post two under Luis Contreras.
