West Point Duo Live Longshots in Graded Stakes
Two West Point sophomores are live longshots in graded stakes on Saturday. They are amongst 10 West Point 3-year-olds nominated to the 2018 Triple Crown.
Septimius Severus takes on six in the $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs. West Point purchased the handsome son of Roman Ruler privately following a win at Aqueduct (watch video) at the end of November. He joined George Weaver’s barn and was most recently second in a seven-furlong allowance race at Gulfstream.
The original plan was to point to a two-turn allowance race, but the colt had a seriously strong work at Palm Beach Downs under Tyler Gaffalione. And we know it’s also the time of year when 3-year-olds can very quickly launch themselves onto the Kentucky Derby scene! Our colt is lightly raced and improving and should appreciate the added distance.
Septimius Severus breaks from post 4 under Eclipse Award-winning jockey Jose Ortiz. Post time for the Sam Davis is 4:52 ET. The first four finishers in the race earn Kentucky Derby qualifying points.
Just over half an hour following the Sam Davis, Kanthaka runs in the $200,000 San Vicente Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita. He’ll have a large cheering section of West Point Partners who join Nancy Dollase and Jeff Lifson at the races on Saturday.
The son of Jimmy Creed broke his maiden in impressive fashion at second asking on opening day of the Santa Anita meet (watch video). It was a great effort -- he overcame loads of trouble to draw off in the final yards.
The original plan was to try the Jerry Hollendorfer around two turns in an allowance, but the race was not used. We hope to use the San Vicente as a springboard to a Kentucky Derby prep race.
West Point purchased Kanthaka at the 2017 Barrett’s 2-Year-Old Sale held in March at Del Mar.
Kanthaka breaks from post five in the field of six under Flavien Prat. Post time is 2:30 PT/5:30 ET.
Good luck Partners!
