What a finish, what a horse!

Jaxon Traveler got his nose down at the wire and secured the richest victory to date in a stellar career on Saturday in the $250,000 Whitmore Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park. He was greeted in the winner’s circle by several dozen members of the Racing Hall of Fame, including his trainer Steve Asmussen, all witnessing an exciting feature on Hall of Fame Day at the track in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Jaxon Traveler notched his seventh career stakes triumph, taking advantage of a terrific ride from a Hall of Famer in the making, Flavien Prat.

The 6-year-old Maryland-bred held off a late charge from the defending Whitmore winner, Tejano Twist.

Asmussen said, “Watching it live, obviously, I was hoping that he held on like he did. But definitely a big sigh of relief when (they) put his number up. So proud of Jaxon Traveler. He is all the way back to his best.” Recap from Oaklawn

Flavien said, “It was a good trip. He settled down nice on the outside and made a good move when I asked him to go. I thought I kept a little something, but I knew it was going to be close.”

Acquired for $140,000 at the 2020 OBS April sale of two-year-olds in training, Jaxon Traveler has been first or second in 16 of his 28 career starts, including nine wins. He has earned $891,849.
