Pure Indy Comes From the Clouds First Time Out / Sunday, September 2, 2012

Meet racing’s newest rising star, a tall, leggy, chestnut daughter of Pure Prize named Pure Indy owned by West Point Thoroughbreds.

On the last Saturday of the 2012 Del Mar meet, this 2-year-old stamped herself as one to watch with a visually impressive first out score for trainer Craig Dollase.

Bred by A. Lakin and Sons in Kentucky and out of the A.P. Indy mare Gatherindy, Pure Indy is from the immediate family of grade one winner Pure Clan and graded stakes winner Greater Good. The WPT buying team, led by Terry Finley, purchased her at the 2012 Barretts March 2-Year-Old in Training Sale.

Off as the 3-1 favorite, Pure Indy trailed the field in the early stages and seemed to have her work cut out for her at the top of the stretch after the leaders set modest opening fractions. She was taken five wide by pilot Victor Espinoza, lugged in some midstretch, but showed an explosive turn of foot and scored by a length and a quarter on the line. "And here's Pure Indy from out of the clouds," said Trevor Denman. "Pure Indy comes from last and mows them all down. Pure Indy impressive."

“My filly didn’t like the kickback in the early part of the race, but once I got her outside she exploded,” said Victor Espinoza. “She’s still green and learning the game. There’s definitely more in the tank. I love how she galloped out.”

Craig Dollase joined four excited Partners and their families in the winner’s circle.

“Like we did when Tree of Life won, West Point Partners and I watched the race from the rail and cheered this filly home,” said Dollase. “Boy was it exciting. I was a big fan of her at the Barrett’s sale and she was one Terry and I knew we had to have. Everything she does is done with class and she’s loaded with talent. It’s not too often you see a two-year-old rate like that and then show that turn of foot after such modest fractions.”

“After that kind of showing, you’re hard pressed not to think a filly like this can get her Partners to the Breeders’ Cup, said WPT president Terry Finley. “Kudos to Craig and their team. They took their time with her this summer and it showed today. I love her stride; she acts like she can run all day.”

Pure Indy earned $42,000 for the victory. Chances are she’s seen in a graded stakes race after such an impressive performance.

Craig Dollase and Victor Espinoza have a prerace peptalk and Partners Bruce and Cass Maller visit their star filly the morning after the race.
