With Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector so dominant it's tough to find an outcross sire these days, but Shirocco's first crop indicates he's going to be one of the best around.
By the great German sire Monsun, Shirocco was a terrific racehorse, winning the German and Italian Derbys at three, the Gran Premio Jockey Club Italiano (G1) at four, and the Breeders' Cup Turf(G1) and Coronation Cup(G1) at five.
Shirocco's first crop of 3-year-olds includes the top French colt Grand Vent, who has won two Group 2s, German Group 2 winner Arrigo, and two other stakes winners to date, plus Group 1 placed colts Brown Panther and Ibicenco.
This handsome colt is the fourth foal of a Fusaichi Pegasus mare whose first two foals are winners. His second dam is full sister to Group 3 winner Sueboog, dam of Group 1 winner Best of the Bests, and two other stakes winners, as well as the dams of three other stakes winners.
With stamina from Shirocco and speed from Fusaichi Pegasus and his speedy female family, this colt should be a versatile runner with classic potential.
Terry on Shirocco colt: “He sold at the end of the Goffs Orby sale in Ireland. I walked into the ring thinking he was going to go for a lot of money. This is a quality horse that fell through the cracks. What I like most about him in his movement. We saw him gallop around on a lunge line during his wind test, and he gets over the ground so easily. All of his body parts just fit together.”
Jeff Lifson on Shirocco colt, "This is the type of horse where all the parts fit together. He's got a very versatile pedigree, and I think he's a great fit in Graham Motion's program."
