Sunrise Smarty Wins! / Monday, February 28, 2011

It’s not often you’ll see us wheel a horse back in 16 days.

It’s not often you’ll see us wheel a horse back in 16 days. But we have confidence in our trainers when they said, “We’re ready.” After a troubled trip in an “a other than” allowance back on February 10th at Aqueduct, Sunrise Smarty ran a breakthrough race on Friday, leading the field from gate to wire and stopping the teletimer in a sharp 1.09:27 for 6 furlongs over the inner track. Jockey Channing Hill hustled him from the gate before assuming the role as passenger for the remainder of the race and scoring by five lengths on the line. Click here to see the race chart. Our son of Smarty Jones earned an impressive 104 Beyer Speed Figure. Well done to trainer Mike Hushion and his team!

Channing Hill said, “My colt was perfect today. He felt great and was much the best.”

Mike Hushion said, “My instructions to Channing were simple; if you’re not in front a quarter mile into the race, don’t bother coming back. This colt used his very high cruising speed much to his advantage today. I blew him out two furlongs on Thursday morning to make sure he was on his toes, and he showed today that he was. This is the breakthrough effort we’ve been waiting for with him.”

Sunrise Smarty earned $26,400 for his second career victory. He now has a record of 2-2-1 from 7 career starts. Look for him back in action at Aqueduct.

Congratulations to his Partners! You looked great in the winner’s circle!
