Trainer Dale Romans stood up in and paused after the horses crossed the wire in Monday’s first race at Saratoga.

“Our patience paid off with this one,” said Romans in his Kentucky accent. He then made his way down to the winner’s circle to greet Suns Out Guns Out- WPT’s newest winner in the stable. Romans is no stranger to the winner’s circle. Less than 48 hours earlier he saddled Arlington Million (G1) winner Little Mike.

A 3-year-old son of Empire Maker, Suns Out Guns Out scored by a length and a half in his first conventional dirt start since March. Under leading rider Ramon Dominguez, he patiently stalked the pacesetter before being set down entering the stretch and prevailing in the mile and one eighth event. 

After three even races on the turf, the decision was made to move this colt back to the dirt, the surface he nearly broke his maiden on this winter at Gulfstream.

“There’s quite a bit of grass in his pedigree, which is why we took a few shots,” said Romans. “This is the third time we’ve run him at the meet- just wanted to shake things up, and it worked. This horse was very immature as a two-year-old. Terry and the Partners allowed me to give him the time he needed to grow up. It took us awhile to get here, but everything seems to finally be coming together for this horse.”

Terry Finley watched the race from Seattle, Washington- site of Awesome Gem’s third place finish in the Longacres Mile last night. “I like when I see Ramon Dominguez sitting chilly with a ton of horse on the turn,” said Finley. “This horse has been a bit of a challenge for us as he hasn’t always kicked on and kept going when headed by other horses. Ramon gave him a perfect ride and this should boost his confidence.”

Suns Out Guns Out earned $51,000 for the win.
