We always say do right by the horse and the horse will take care of you. It was a long time coming, but Tony Adams proved he was worth the wait when he dominated in a Florida-bred maiden special weight yesterday at Gulfstream Park.
Trained by Tom Albertrani and owned by West Point Thoroughbreds and St. Elias Stable, Tony Adams was dispatched as the favorite in the six-furlong event. He broke running and sat just off the pacesetter’s flank before drawing away under very little urging on the turn. The final margin of victory was 10 lengths. He downright blew them away.
“When this Florida-bred race for three-year-olds and up came up, we knew we had to run, even if he wasn’t completely fit,” said trainer Tom Albertrani. “Going into the race I thought he was about 90%, but it didn’t matter, he did it so easy. Luis Saez said he was just along for the ride. He’s one of the most naturally talented horses I’ve ever been around.”
When we bought him as a 2-year-old, he shined like a copper penny, and he still shines like a copper penny today. His Partners have patiently waited for two years to get the chestnut son of High Cotton to the races, and after a performance like this, his future looks very promising
The win was special for Vinnie and Teresa Viola of St. Elias Stable as Tony Adams is named after Teresa’s late grandfather, Tony Adamo.
Tony Adams will likely return in a Florida-bred first level allowance at Gulfstream next month. Congratulations to all of his Partners. It looks like it’s going to be a fun year.
