Greg Foley is one of the winningest trainers in the history of Churchill Downs, his hometown track and site of perhaps the most prestigious victory in his nearly 40 years as a trainer when Sconsin prevailed in the $300,000 Eight Belles Stakes on Kentucky Derby day in 2020.
Racing has long been a family business for Greg: his father, Dravo, trained for 48 years after starting out as a jockey. Dravo trained 1,163 winners, many of them while Greg grew up working in the barn. Greg opened his own stable at age 23 and surpassed the 1,400-win mark in 2020, with 400-plus coming at Churchill. His sister, Vicki, also is a successful Louisville-based trainer, and they share a barn together at Fair Grounds in New Orleans during the winter.
Greg’s assistant is his son, Travis, who extended the family’s involvement to a third generation after graduating from the University of Louisville with a master’s degree.
