Tree of Life Breaks Maiden First Time Out / Sunday, August 19, 2012

WPT’s 2-year-old colt Tree of Life broke his maiden in impressive fashion Saturday afternoon at Del Mar, providing his Partners with a huge thrill.

A 2012 Barrett’s March juvenile purchase, this son of Lion Heart broke a bit slow and was as many as ten lengths off a sharp early pace. He moved up inside on the final turn, angled off the rail a sixteenth out, rallied under some left handed urging and good handling to sweep to the front in deep stretch and win by a length and a half going away. Did we mention he paid 47.60 to win? Hope you had a few dollars on him.

Terry Finley is on the West Coast for the weekend and was where “the surf meets the turf” Saturday afternoon. “There are a number of first time owners on this horse, which makes the win that much more special,” said Finley. “We watched the race as a group by the winner’s circle and I can assure you we were pretty loud the last eighth of a mile. What a closing kick he showed.”

Trainer Craig Dollase was thrilled after the victory. “I was at the sale when Terry and the team bought Tree of Life and really liked him,” said Dollase.” He’s not the tallest horse in the world, but is very, very athletic, sort of like Awesome Gem. He’s shown talent in the mornings, but we thought he’d need a race or two and would need more distance. I’m happy to say he proved us wrong!”

Victor Espinoza, who was aboard Tree of Life in the final breeze before his debut was also smiles after the race. “He’s got a long stride on him,” said Espinoza. “When I asked him today he just took off. When I angled out down the lane he just kept going.”

Tree of Life was purchased with the assistance of DataTrack International, developers of BreezeFigsTM, a "speed figure" system that analyzes stride length and other factors of horses in motion at 2-year-old sales or at racetracks (in races or morning breezes) to select the most promising racing prospects.

Tree of Life’s BreezeFig of 67 (par is 63) was one of the best at the Barrett’s Sale, and his 25.29 foot stride length is above average.

Congratulations to Tree of Life’s Partners! His next race plans will be determined within the next one to two weeks.
