WPT Trio in Breeders’ Cup / Wednesday, October 30, 2013

WPT sends out three horses in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup World Championships: Suns Out Guns Out (Marathon), Rock Me Baby (Turf Sprint), and Twilight Eclipse (Turf).

The weekend kicks off with Suns Out Guns Out (also know as “SOGO” around the barn) in the $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Marathon (G2). A son of Empire Maker out of a Smart Strike mare, he’s bred to handle the demanding 1 3/4 mile distance. Trained by Dale Romans, he comes off an impressive second level allowance score on September 21 at Parx Racing.

“The group of Suns Out Guns Out owners have showed tremendous patience,” said Romans. “It took this colt 11 tries to break his maiden, but he’s gotten better and better since then and is training like a beast. He’s hit the board in eight of his last 12 starts and I know we haven’t seen the best of him yet.”

Julien Leparoux has the return call in the Breeders’ Cup.

Hard-knocking Cal-bred Rock Me Baby looks to rebound from a very tough trip in the September 27 Eddie D. Stakes at Santa Anita in Saturday’s $1,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1).

“Edwin’s (Maldonado) feet were on the dashboard the last sixteenth of a mile in the Eddie D.,” said WPT president Terry Finley. “Luck is such a big factor in downhill races and I think he would have been right there if he had anywhere at all to go. I give so much credit to Craig (Dollase). We strategically placed this horse, took advantage of his Cal-bred status, and he deserves a shot at the big boys.”

Craig Dollase is the youngest to condition a Breeders' Cup winner as he sent out Reraise to victory in the 1998 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) at Churchill Downs. Click here to read more.

Joe Talamo assumes piloting duties on Rock Me Baby in the Turf Sprint. Talamo won the race in 2009 aboard another Cal-bred, California Flag. Click here to watch the race.

Terry Finley and Tom Albertrani called an audible last weekend by deciding to bypass the Pattison Canadian International on October 27 with world record holder Twilight Eclipse. The 4-year-old Purim gelding is now entered in the $3,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) with Julien Leparoux aboard.

“It’s been very rainy in Toronto lately and Twilight Eclipse doesn’t care for boggy turf,” said Finley. “A little bit of rain wouldn’t have scared us off, but we know it’ll be a rock solid course at Santa Anita. This horse set the world record in the Pan American in March before running bangup seconds in two grade one races. We’re coming off a bit of a head scratcher in the Joe Hirsch, but we know there’s enough gas in the tank to get the job done against this caliber field.”
