Traffic woes stymied Cagliostro in a third-place finish in last month’s Indiana Derby (G3), and he gets a chance to make amends on Tuesday in the $300,000 Smarty Jones Stakes (G3) for 3-year-olds at Parx racetrack near Philadelphia.
Cristian Torres takes the reins on the son of Upstart, with the rail post in a field of nine. The Smarty Jones is the local prep for the $1-million Pennsylvania Derby (G1) on September 23 at Parx.
Co-owner David Ingordo said, “On paper, Cagliostro looks very competitive in this spot as his speed figures fit and there’s only one other graded stakes-placed horse in the field. The speed is drawn all outside of Cagliostro and Torres can use the one post to get a good stalking position.”
Victory Way, third-place finisher in the Grade 3 Bay Shore Stakes back in April, is the other horse with Graded stakes credentials. Salute the Stars, winner of the Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park in mid-June, is the 3-to-1 favorite on the morning line, with Cagliostro listed at 5-to-1.
Cagliostro has been working in company with an older stablemate, Stage Raider, who won a stakes race at Ellis Park last weekend.
