Aiming for Stakes Success at Santa Anita, Sunland / Friday, February 16, 2024

Final Boss and Jaxon Traveler will tackle sprint stakes out west for West Point Thoroughbreds this weekend.

Final Boss, 3, will traverse the hillside course at Santa Anita for the first time on Saturday in the $100,000 Baffle Stakes at six and one-half furlongs. The son of American Pharoah graduated going three quarters of a mile on the Santa Anita turf last November. Kazushi Kimura will pilot Final Boss for trainer John Sadler, who swept two grass stakes at The Great Race Place last weekend.

After not taking to the slop at Oaklawn two weeks ago, Jaxon Traveler will wheel back on Sunday in the $100,000 Bill Thomas Memorial Stakes at Sunland Park. The Maryland-bred veteran raided New Mexico for a similar race in late November at Zia Park and powered to a 5 1/2-length tour de force underneath Joel Rosario, just missing a track record. Jaxon Traveler, with Rosario back in the irons, is the 2-to-1 morning-line favorite for Sunday’s race.

Jaxon Traveler is looking to become a stakes winner for the fifth straight season.
