Carson’s Run Leads the Turf Team This Weekend in the Saratoga Derby / Friday, August 2, 2024

Carson's Run and Dylan Davis on the grass at Saratoga in 2023.

A Grade 1 winner as a 2-year-old and rejuvenated in a stakes win at Monmouth Park in June, Carson’s Run is back at the highest level on Saturday in the $600,000 Saratoga Derby (G1).

Carson’s Run and Dylan Davis take on seven rivals, stretching out to a mile and three-sixteenths. The chestnut colt blazed through the stretch to win going the Tale of the Cat Stakes going away on June 23 at Monmouth Park. Carson’s Run broke his maiden on the Saratoga grass last summer.

Trainer Christophe Clement, Davis and West Point teamed up on Thursday with Parnac in the Grade 2 Glens Falls Stakes on the turf at Saratoga, and she responded with a strong second-place finish at 21-to-1 odds.

West Point also will have turf action on Friday at Saratoga, with Zverev listed at 4-to-1 odds for the Grade 2 National of Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Stakes. Jose Ortiz guides Zverev, as he did when the colt won an allowance at Churchill by 2 1/4 lengths.

Cherie DeVaux trains the son of Oscar Performance.

Cherie had a 3yo turf winner last Saturday with West Point and co-owners when The Process scored in an allowance at Colonial Downs. Jorge Ruiz piloted The Process, who took command in the stretch and poured it on to win by 4 lengths.

Grass will be a theme from coast to coast this weekend, with Final Boss also slated for the turf in the $100,000 La Jolla Stakes at Del Mar. Final Boss is coming off a dominant first stakes win at Santa Anita when he set all the pace and drew off in the Cinema Stakes on June 16.
