Take two on the Kentucky Derby trail comes on Sunday for Sandman, who had a tough trip finishing fifth in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes going a one-turn mile on September 14.
Sandman earned a single Derby point that day, after he was stuck behind most of the field on the inside, taking lots of kickback, and advanced with a decent run to the wire.
“I was a little disappointed, but it’s hard to sustain a run when you’re eating that much dirt,” said trainer Mark Casse, who has won the Street Sense twice, as has jockey Brian Hernandez Jr.
Sandman also finished a green fifth in his debut on June 27, but followed that up with a strong win at Saratoga on August 10. West Point and co-owners D.J. Stable, St. Elias Stable and CJ Stables will be looking for that kind of rebound on Sunday, listed at 9-to-2 odds in a field of 10.
