Super Rebound From Superpower at Aqueduct / Tuesday, January 28, 2025

Superpower made a super jump forward at Aqueduct on Saturday, leading all the way at 37-to-1 odds and holding on to win his second career start.

Jockey Eric Cancel was on the money, rationing Superpower out front with blinkers added and getting him to the wire first.

Christophe Clement trains Superpower, who had struggled mightily in his debut on December 7, finishing a well-beaten eight.

West Point and Steven Bouchey acquired Superpower at the Keeneland September yearling sale. Those are the same connections of Carson’s Run, a multiple Grade 1 winner for the Clement barn.

Superpower’s breakthrough came on a day when West Point had a couple of stellar runs in defeat.

Integration carried the lead into deep stretch in the $1-million Pegasus World Cup Turf at Gulfstream Park, only to be caught in the final yards by Spirit of St. Louis. Integration fell a neck short and earned a career-best 102 Beyer Speed Figure for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey.

About a half-hour later, Sandman seemed to lose all chance at the start of the $1-million Southwest Stakes when he stumbled badly, with jockey Cristian Torres defying gravity to stay in the irons, and yet Sandman nearly overcame it all with an extremely long drive, finishing second by a length to Speed King.

Torres said, “We lost the race at the start. I let him settle the first part of the race. He’s a nice horse and responded really well when I asked him at the three-eighths (pole) and he finished up. But definitely the start cost us. He just stumbled out of there. He was standing perfect. It happens a lot in horse racing, but I’m happy the way he finished up. With all the training he missed (winter weather), he ran a big, big race. I’ve very happy and we’ll get them next time.”

Hall of Famer Mark Casse trains Sandman for West Point, D. J. Stable, St. Elias Stable and CJ Stables. The colt ranks 10th on the Derby leaderboard with 14 qualifying points.
