Sandman, 7th in Sloppy Derby, On to the Preakness Stakes / Friday, May 9, 2025

While Sandman didn’t deliver the result that West Point Thoroughbreds was hoping for in the Kentucky Derby, it was a weekend to remember nonetheless, more than 200 strong between partners and their families and a gray colt who captivated a lot of people at the racetrack and beyond.

From Thursday night’s partner party to braving the rain together on Friday and Saturday at Churchill Downs, and wrapping it all up with a special backstretch tour on Sunday morning—which has become a West Point tradition—it was a weekend filled with camaraderie and pride.

A sincere thank you from West Point to Mark Casse and his team for being such a dream to work with, and speaking of dreams, partner Griffin Johnson has been such an ideal ambassador for our sport, sharing his experience with millions of new eyeballs. On to the next chapter with Sandman — in the Preakness Stakes on May 17 at Pimlico!
