West Point Thoroughbreds extends its deepest condolences to the family and team of Christophe Clement, one of West Point’s go-to trainers over the last decade.
CEO Terry Finley said, “Christophe was not only one of the most respected and accomplished trainers in our sport, but also a true gentleman and family man who embodied integrity, class, and dedication. He will truly be missed.”
Christophe trained 20 West Point horses at the time of his passing on Sunday, May 25 at age 59. That list includes Grade 1 winner Carson’s Run, along with Graded stakes winners Dontlookbackatall, Gal in a Rush and Kertez. Among his alumni for West Point were Grade 1 winner Decorated Invader and Grade 2 winner Parnac. In 2022, he saddled West Point’s 1000th all-time winner, Phantom Smoke, at Saratoga.
West Point executive vice president Tom Bellhouse worked closely with Christophe through the years and said the following in Daily Racing Form’s obituary written by David Grening: “He let the horse tell him where to go more than any other trainer we ever had and it was amazing how in touch he was with the animals. We’ve been doing business with Chris just shy of 10 years and the success we had and running in the big races was amazing. To take Carson’s Run, who was very modest, and make him a multiple Grade 1 winner, is a testament to his brilliant horsemanship, not to mention what a special person he was.”
Christophe was both prolific and gracious in sharing video updates on West Point’s horses under his care, often signing off with a signature phrase: “Keeping the dream alive, all good!”
Christophe’s legacy with West Point Thoroughbreds will endure, as the 20 horses will remain in the Clement barn under the capable leadership of his son and longtime assistant, Miguel Clement. Our heartfelt thoughts are with Miguel and his wife, Acacia; Christophe’s wife, Valerie; his daughter, Charlotte; her husband, Shaun Collins; and their son, Hugo Christophe Clement Collins.
