Counting Stars Shines in Debut at Churchill / Friday, September 26, 2025

Counting Stars added excitement to the budding West Point Thoroughbreds cast of 2-year-olds on Thursday night when she ignited through the stretch for a debut victory at Churchill Downs.

Irad Ortiz Jr. guided Counting Stars, who is the sixth 2-year-old winner for WPT this season, with upcoming engagements for Ewing in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity, Curtain Call in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes and Intricate Spirit in the Grade 3 Futurity Stakes.

Counting Stars was a workmate this spring with Ewing, her stablemate for trainer Mark Casse. On Thursday, the filly relaxed well, advanced in the turn and poured it on to prevail by 4 lengths.

The filly started off a double for West Point Thoroughbreds in the evening hours Thursday as Pascaline followed with a victory in the slop at Charles Town for jockey Angel Cruz and trainer Arnaud Delacour.
