Counting Stars put on a show in Friday’s $1-million Fantasy Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park, drawing off to win by 5 1/2 lengths and punch her ticket to the Kentucky Oaks.
The white-faced filly had plenty in the tank when jockey Francisco Arrieta asked her going into the far turn, quickly opening up daylight on four opponents. She and Arrieta have been dynamite together at Oaklawn, notching three stakes wins as well as a close second in the Honeybee (G3).
“She has always seemed special, even though she has had a few bumps in the road, but I was expecting a big effort from her,” trainer Mark Casse said. “She trained really good up into this race.”
Secured by bloodstock agent David Ingordo for $150,000 at last year’s OBS April sale, Counting Stars has now won 4 times in 7 starts and has earned $972,602.
Arrieta said, “Last week when I worked her, she really impressed me and today she was looking amazing in the paddock and the post parade. She was feeling good. It’s very exciting.”
West Point and Casse have been down this road before: last year at Oaklawn they scored in the Arkansas Derby (G1) with Sandman, another OBS 2yo sale graduate.
