Preside provided a fitting finish to West Point Thoroughbreds’ Saratoga meet Saturday, producing a strong late run to capture a $120,000 allowance race and give West Point its fifth victory of the summer at the Spa.

With Dylan Davis aboard, Preside settled just off the pace in the 1 1/8-mile race before being guided to the outside for his run. Once straightened away and focused on the task, the 3-year-old Tiz the Law colt kicked in through the final furlong, taking command in the final sixteenth and drawing clear to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

Preside commande the top price at the 2025 OBS April sale of 2-year-olds in training, but for this sizable colt by champion 3-year-old Tiz the Law, the transition from sales standout to racehorse was not a straight line. Preside needed time to mature physically and mentally, and Steve Asmussen and his team resisted the temptation to rush him. Becky Maker also played an important role during that process, caring for Preside during his time away from the racetrack at her farm in Versailles, Kentucky.

That patience is paying dividends. Preside did not make his debut until June of his 3-year-old season, but he has steadily progressed through four starts. After breaking his maiden at Saratoga on July 30, he successfully stepped into allowance company Saturday. His last three races have produced Beyer Speed Figures of 95, 96 and 96, giving him the kind of consistency that suggests he is ready to be tested at a higher level.

Preside came out of Saturday’s race in good shape and is back on the track at Saratoga. The $300,000 Oklahoma Derby (G3) for 3-year-olds at Remington Park on Sunday, September 27 will be considered for his next start as his connections assess how he exits his latest effort.
