One year ago today, on the first Saturday of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, McCoy was purchased with this kind of success in mind: the Pennsylvania-bred returned to his native state on Saturday and delivered a debut victory on the undercard of the Pennsylvania Derby, the biggest day of the year at Parx Racing.

Jorge Vargas Jr. put the 2-year-old Vekoma colt in a stalking position before McCoy swept to the lead at the top of the stretch and held his nearest rival safely at bay, winning the $100,000 maiden special weight by 1 3/4 lengths for trainer Cherie DeVaux.

The victory carried an added layer of homecoming significance. McCoy’s dam, stakes winner Fat Kat, won six races at Parx during her career, including three consecutive victories to begin her racing career and the 2016 Power by Far Stakes.
