And Seek has trained like he is capable of more than he has produced on the racetrack to date and on Friday night he will have the chance to prove it on a big stage in the $250,000 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows outside Des Moines.
The 3-year-old colt steps up for his first stakes appearance, on the heels of a pair of decent efforts in allowance company at Churchill Downs. He finished fourth, beaten a length and a quarter, on the Kentucky Derby card and followed with a third-place finish on May 30 where he was beaten just a half-length for everything. He owns a win, a second, two thirds and two fourths over his last six starts and gives the impression, based on his morning work, that he can improve further.
With that in mind, trainer Dale Romans is adding blinkers for the 8 1/2-furlong Iowa Derby, looking to help And Seek belly down in the stretch and finish up strongly. Chris Landeros retains the mount on And Seek, who drew post nine in a competitive-looking field of 12.
